John, the One Who Experienced the Holy Jerusalem

John, the One Who Experienced the Holy Jerusalem

Scripture Reading : Revelation 7:9-17; 21:1-22:5

Introduction

What is heaven look like?

  • As heaven is the final destination of every Christian, we must have a glimpse of heaven while we continue our Christian walk on earth as a pilgrim.

The Apostle John had an entrance to heaven and John also had an experience of heaven.

  • Rev 4:1-11
  • Today we continue further on this from Rev 7:9-17 and 21:1-22:5.

The Lamb, the Centre of Heaven (7:9, 17)

The central attraction in heaven will be the Lamb of God.

  • Rev 4:2-3; 5:5-14
  • The central attraction in the Bible is the Lamb of God.
  • It is because He is the Redeemer. Same will be in heaven.

God Tabernacles with Men and His Glory Everywhere (21:3, 23)

The lost Paradise will be regained in heaven. The result will be the fullness of fellowship between the Groom and the Bride (cf Eph 5:23-27).

  • First, in heaven saints shall have the greatest and the fullest presence of God. No man in this world has so complete and full a presence of God; but in heaven the presence of God shall be so full and complete that nothing can be added to it to make it more complete.
  • Secondly, believers shall have a soul-satisfying presence of God in heaven.
  • Thirdly, as they shall enjoy a satisfying presence of God in heaven, so they shall enjoy a constant, permanent presence of God in heaven.

Heaven, the Most Beautiful Architecture Wonder (21:11-21)

Heaven will be the most brilliant and glorious architecture of ever because its builder is God (Hebrews 11:10).

  • Names of precious stones are used because they are costly and beautiful and we will be able to understand its value with our limited comprehension.

The Redeemed, the Bride, be the Occupants (7:14; 21:10, 27)

Only the redeemed of God be able to enter into heaven.

The Redeemed will Serve Him or Worship Him, and Reign with Him (7:15; 22:5)

The redeemed will be busy in heaven, serving the Lamb with uninterrupted worship (7:15). They will also reign with Him for ever and ever (22:5).

The Lamb shall Shepherd the Bride (7:17; 21:4)

This is the most astounding of all, the Lamb will serve the redeemed (Ps 23).

  • The Redeemer, even in heaven, will continue to shepherd the redeemed.
  • The enjoyment in heaven will be the fullest that the redeemed find no lack.

Conclusion

Colossians 3:2, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”

Jonathan Edwards:

First, let not your heart go after the things of this world as your chief good.

  • Indulge not yourself in the possession of earthly things as though they were to satisfy your soul.

Second, you must in your meditations and holy exercises be much engaged in conversing with heavenly persons, objects, and enjoyments.

  • You cannot constantly be seeking heaven without having your thoughts much there.
  • Turn, then, the stream of your thoughts and affections toward that world of love, toward the God of love that dwells there, and toward the saints and angels that are at Christ’s right hand.

Third, be content to pass through all difficulties in the way to heaven.

  • Though the path is before you and you may walk in it if you desire, yet it is a way that is ascending and filled with many difficulties and obstacles.
  • That glorious city of light and love is, as it were, on the top of a high hill or mountain, and there is no way to it but by upward and [exhausting] steps.
  • But though the ascent be difficult and the way full of trials, still it is worth your while to meet them all for the sake of coming and dwelling in such a glorious city.

Fourth, in all your way let your eye be fixed on Jesus, Who has gone to heaven as your forerunner.

  • Look to Him. Behold His glory in heaven, that a sight of it may stir you up the more earnestly to desire to be there.
