Scripture Portion : Luke 19:28-40
Today we begin the first day of the Passion Week or the Holy Week. In the Jewish calendar today marks the Triumphal Entry of the Lord Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, which is known as the Palm Sunday.
- In the Lord Jesus Christ, two things are uniquely joined together—the suffering servant and the victorious King.
- Jesus’ entry to the city of Jerusalem before His crucifixion is a vivid picture of this truth and the prophet Zechariah prophesied this nearly five hundred years before the coming of Christ.
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, your King is coming to you: He is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey (Zechariah 9:9).
The events unfolded in the week ahead were highly significant for every human being lived on the face of the earth. The events were the finale of the first advent of the Savior, the Son of God became the Son of Man so that the sons of men could become the sons of God.
The Meek King (vv 28-34)
The Lord Jesus Christ, as He planned the Finale of His incarnation mission, He showed to the world that in His mission, He came to save sinners, the downtrodden, the despised, the poor and the needy.
- Jesus did not choose to ride on a horse or a golden chariot, which royalty would select, but He chose a meekest of all the animals, a donkey.
- This was in accordance with the prophetical revelation: Gen 49:8-12; Zech 9:9
- His first advent was for the “gathering of His people” to bring peace (donkey, a symbol of peace), not to bring destruction.
- Philippians 2:6-8, Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
- His incarnation was the greatest example of His lowliness: 2 Corinthians 5:21, For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Triumphant in His Mission (vv 35-40)
We now come to a very important section of the narrative—Jesus entering to Jerusalem as a Victor, as a Conqueror and a Triumphant King.
- Jesus said, “the Lord has need of him.” This is the King’s Command, and King’s prerogative!
- The people spread their garments upon the donkey and on the road, preparing ‘the red carpet’ for the reception of the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords.
- Matthew (Matt 21:8) and Mark (Mk 11:8) in their narrative add that the people also cut palm branches from the tress and spread on the road, which signified the entry of a victorious Conqueror.
- The people shouted, saying, “Blessed is the King who is comes in the name of the LORD, Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” In Matt 21:9 and Mark 11:9 they shouted
Hosanna, which literally means “Save now” (Ps 118:25-26).
- When the chief religious leaders were not happy in the development, Jesus said, “If these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out” (Lk 19:40). Jesus is indeed the King who has power and control over the cosmological elements!
Our Lord’s triumphal entry was very different as His conquest would be spiritual and not military. Christ’s triumph would be the victory of love over hatred, truth over error, and life over death.
- He straightaway entered into the Temple, and that’s the place He belongs (Matt 11:11)
- He wept over Jerusalem and cleansed the Temple (Luke 19:41-48).
- He entered into Jerusalem to give us a new and living way (Heb 10:20).
The Meek King: He came in search of sinners, and gave His life for their salvation. God so loved the world, gave His only begotten Son.
The Triumphant King: He entered into Jerusalem truly as a Conqueror, and became victorious in His mission. Whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.
